Lorraine Ivey Shuttleworth – A Different Kind of Legacy

Leave a Legacy month, marked in May, is traditionally a time when non-profits encourage their donors to leave a gift in their will, but doing this isn’t the only way to help grow your legacy. London Community Foundation encourages sustainable, forward-thinking philanthropy, and part of that means thinking about the legacy of your fund.

Donors who make a bequest to the Foundation or give a gift of life insurance become members of the Lorraine Ivey Shuttleworth Society named after a philanthropist who embodied the spirit of building community by being forward-thinking.

In her life, Lorraine Ivey Shuttleworth made significant contributions to many organizations, particularly in the fields of education and health. She did this both personally and through her role as President of The Richard and Jean Ivey Fund. As a fundholder at London Community Foundation, Lorraine knew that her fund would continue to grant to the causes she cared about forever, though when thinking about how the fund would continue her legacy, she went down a different path.

Many fundholders have agreements in place to transition management of their funds to family members or advisors.  When Lorraine passed in 2018, she had requested that her endowment be converted into an operating fund for London Community Foundation, strengthening the ground upon which our work, and the work of all donors and fundholders, is built.

Our operating endowment allows the Foundation a level of flexibility uncommon in public foundations and is one of the reasons why we can distribute sustainable community-strengthening grants through Community Vitality, take leadership of essential projects in our community like Vision SoHo Alliance, and continue to monitor the needs of the community and the work done by its charities through Vital Signs, all at the same time.

We know that every philanthropist is different, and the route Lorraine took is not for everyone, but at London Community Foundation we pride ourselves on our personalized service and creative solutions. We are always willing to talk to you about your giving goals, both short and long-term, and how we can help you achieve them.

Donating to London Community Foundation or opening a fund with us means giving back to your community forever. We know that our donors and fundholders value forward-thinking, innovative approaches to philanthropy as much as Lorraine Ivey Shuttleworth did.

Please get in touch with us to talk about how we can help you build your legacy, whether that means making a bequest, planning for the future of your fund, or anything else you have in mind.
