The J. Allyn Taylor Community Service Award
The J. Allyn Taylor Community Service Award
Since 1983 the J. Allyn Taylor Community Service Award has been recognizing grade 10 and 11 students who exhibit outstanding service and leadership in their community. The award pays tribute to J. Allyn Taylor, a former President of Canada Trust and an extraordinary community leader.
Affectionately dubbed “Mr. London,” J. Allyn Taylor was instrumental in revitalizing London Community Foundation in 1979 and continued to serve the community as Honorary Chair of the Foundation’s Board until his passing in 2006.
The Youth in Philanthropy Committee (YiP) is responsible for adjudicating this award. YiP is a panel of young people who meet four times a year to make grant decisions about youth-focused projects. YiP is supported by a partnership between LCF and Young London (formerly London Youth Advisory Council).
The recipient of the award will receive $2,000 to a Canadian post-secondary institution for their education and $500 to be donated to the charity of their choice. Students must be attending a school located in London or Middlesex County, ON within a publicly funded school board.
“I’m so very impressed with the young people who receive this award,” says Ann Fleming, the daughter of J. Allyn Taylor. “They show such leadership and give back in important and meaningful ways. Aren’t we lucky to have them in our community?”
Nourhan Ali, the 2019 honouree of the J. Allyn Taylor Community Service Award, is a grade 12 student at Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School and was nominated by the London Community Chaplaincy for her volunteer work at its Limberlost operations. Passionate about the environment and the future of the planet, Nourhan single-handedly secured a recycling program for her entire complex – a monumental project for a teenager. Nourhan also assists at the summer carnival and as a Junior Leader with after school programs, modelling excellent communication skills, team building, active listening, initiative, responsibility, humour and positivity.
“Nourhan is a remarkable young woman who has invested herself in her community with a selflessness, passion, maturity, and sense of responsibility beyond her years,” says Alyssa Stevenson, London Community Chaplaincy Program Administrator, and Nourhan’s nominator.
Nominations are now open, and will close on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at 2:00 p.m.
