LCF establishes Strong Together Fund to support London’s Muslim community in response to hate crime
The London Community Foundation (LCF) announced today it has established a fund to support the London Muslim community in light of the horrific vehicle attack that killed a Muslim family Sunday evening.
The fund, named the Strong Together fund, will be seeded with an initial gift of $10,000 from LCF. The funds will be directed to the London Muslim Mosque and the Muslim Resource Centre for Social Support and Integration (MRCSSI). All donations will flow directly to these two organizations to support the Muslim community during this difficult time.

Ron Dawson is a life-long Londoner, growing up on Richmond Street North across from the old Richmond Dairy during the Great Depression.
“It was a pretty tough time – lots of people suffered immensely during the Depression,” recalls Ron. “People would go up and down the street, begging for food, or work, or anything at all really. It wasn’t easy for most people, but luckily we managed to get by.”

Dr. Gordon and Cathy Sellery
Dr. Gordon Sellery grew up and went to school in Toronto, eventually studying medicine at the University of Toronto before traveling to England for post-graduate work. Upon his return to Canada, he spent a year with the Grenfell Medical Mission in northern Newfoundland and Labrador.
“I had a very interesting experience traveling the coastlines by dog team or a ski-equipped airplane looking after the medical needs of small fishing communities,” recalls Gord. “I worked with a lot of wonderful people up there who lived off the land, without much disposable income. I donated books and things like that to the local school to help out the community whenever I could.”

Stronger Together
When COVID -19 began rapidly spreading throughout Canada in early 2020, the complete and total disruption it caused left many of our marginalized community members even more vulnerable. People experiencing homelessness in London found it exponentially more difficult and dangerous to access food and shelter. Many people experiencing domestic violence became isolated at home with their abusers. Organizations across the city had to scramble not only to meet health and safety requirements, but also to account for the increased number of community members accessing their services.

Ken Fleet Choral Conducting Scholarship Recipients Announced!
The Ken Fleet Choral Conducting Scholarship is awarded annually to an Ontario choral conducting student, helping them pursue educational opportunities above and beyond their established academic curriculum. The award is usually for $1,000 and funded by the Ken Fleet Choral Conducting Scholarship Fund, but thanks to the amazing generosity of Janet Fleet as well as the Wilson Family Foundation at LCF, this year’s award was increased to two scholarships of $2,000 each. LCF has awarded $216,537 amount in funding to 6 more social purpose organizations in London & Middlesex County as part of the Government of Canada’s Investment Readiness Program (IRP). These organizations are working to create meaningful jobs, strengthen the charitable and nonprofit sector, and address social challenges, including the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These organizations will be better prepared to receive investment, including through the Government of Canada’s Social Finance Fund.

London Community Foundation Takes Part in New Healthy Communities Initiative

London Community Foundation is announcing grants totalling $178,450 to six local organizations working to support women, girls, Two-Spirit and gender-diverse individuals working towards a future grounded in equity, inclusion and justice. The Fund for Gender Equality is part of a partnership with Community Foundations of Canada, funded through the Government of Canada. London Community Foundation is one of 21 local community foundations across Canada that are taking part. In total, these community foundations are granting $3.5 million towards the women’s movement.

Pilot Fund for Gender Equality: Opening the Circle
Violence that is committed against women has been called a shadow pandemic, and like COVID-19, gender-based violence is global and deadly. As reported in our latest Vital Signs report, Be the Change, local organizations conservatively estimate a 30% increase in domestic violence cases since April 2020, and many of the cases being reported are noticeably more severe than usual. In addition to fears about the virus, families are experiencing increased stressors that can elevate the risk for violence – such as unemployment, school interruptions and ongoing social isolation. For women who are isolated at home with an abusive partner, the opportunity to get help has been significantly restricted. Support services are needed now more than ever before.
